I joined WIN because I grew up in a family where 2 of 3 of us (me and siblings) grew up overweight. That meant 2/3 of my family have endured bias, discrimination and hate speech which alters your whole perception of self worth. You spend your life not feeling good enough, feeling that never getting the job, never being chosen for anything, or being treated with dignity is your own fault and all you deserve. People who are overweight seem to be the last minority group that deserves respect, it’s not fair! I want that to change. See me for who I really am and what I have achieved.

Hi guys. My name is Kai and I have been a member of WIN now since July ‘21. I am a member of the Nepean blue mountains metabolic health clinic and through them I meet the team at WIN and decided to join as I like and believe if their ideals of trying to change the stigma of obesity in the general public.
Having been “morbidly obese” since I was 13 not soon after I was diagnosed with arthritis and lost the ability to walk for almost 14 years I did find the challenges of living with discrimination somewhat overwhelming.
I have managed to get my life back on track and getting myself into a better and much healthier me!

When joining WIN, not only did everyone share their stories in a confidential environment, but it was great to hear from WINs medical guest speaker who explained the biology and science around weight loss and exercise. I really appreciated the Questions and Answers segment afterward.

The reason why I joined to learn more about losing weight and also help others in my journey with what I have learnt over the years. We are all different but something I have achieved may help someone else‘s journey in some way.
I feel this group is more like family support helping each other by listening to what they are going through, help in trying to give them other ways to treat the problem.

I first heard about WIN when I read the Advocacy Report for the government to stop prejudice against people living with obesity, I was extremely impressed by this document.
I decided to become involved with WIN to be able to talk to people with similar issues and get to listen to and ask questions of experts.

WIN is the first organisation in Australia that speaks with the voice of lived experience of obesity.
Our members our people whose lives have been impacted by overweight and obesity. This may be in the way of personal experience or as a friend or family member. Either way, we are a group of people who are committed to breaking the weight stigma and bias that many people consistently experience in so many settings.
We are proud to fight for a change in how obesity is portrayed and the way in which it is addressed in all parts of society. Our members contribute to WIN in many ways, whether it be volunteering their time to work on the management and administration of WIN, to share their stories in public domains as a call to action or by simply swapping stories about their experiences and supporting each other for a shared feeling of empowerment. All of these are important.
WIN is governed by an independent Advisory Board which includes representatives with lived experience, education, health, research, finance, project management, business, and community organisation experience.
